  • Japanese name:  ジュエルペット (Je-eru-pe-tto)
  • Creator:  Sanrio and Sega
  • Number of Jewelpets: 42
  • Species: Mammals, non-mammals, and mystical animals
  • Fun fact: In the anime, a boy asked to be turned into a Jewelpet because he fell in love with the Jewelpet Ruby!

WHAT ARE JEWELPETS?

Jewelpets might look like ordinary animal friends, but they’re actually magical pets who live in Jewel Land. They have bright eyes made of shimmering gems! These magical creatures are named after the brilliant gemstones in their eyes. That's because these gems are what give the Jewelpets their power!

These cuties aren’t like regular magical pets either - they’re extraordinarily sociable and intelligent creatures that study to become magicians. Jewelpets partner up together with chosen human beings who awaken them. Together they study magic, endure hardships, train, and help save both Jewel Land and Earth!

IS JEWELPET OWNED BY SANRIO?

Well, yes. After all Sanrio, is one of the creators of the Jewelpets. These gem-eyed pets come from the same kawaii company that made all of the most popular cuties in the kawaii-verse - from the lovable pup Pompompurin, the sweet little bunny My Melody, to the cheeky but charming rebel Kuromi

The Jewelpets were originally created as a media franchise and toy line by Sanrio and Sega Toys in 2008. Did you know that these cuties were actually produced by Yuko Yamaguchi, the third character designer of the Sanrio superstar Hello Kitty? She teamed up with the character designer of Cinnamoroll, Miyuki Okumura. Cinnamoroll’s designer illustrated all the different Jewelpets!

WHAT IS THE STORY BEHIND JEWELPETS?

There are actually two different stories for the Jewelpets. When Sanrio created the franchise, it had an official story for these gem-eyed cuties. A year after Sanrio and Sega launched the Jewelpets, Studio Comet came in and created a cute fantasy anime series based on these magical creatures. The 2009 Jewelpet anime had a totally different story from the franchise!

WHAT IS SANRIO’S STORY FOR THE JEWELPETS?

According to the lore created by Sanrio for the franchise, Jewel Land was accidentally discovered by a girl who found a magical Jewel Box in an antique shop. When she opened the box, a strange light came out and she was sucked inside a shimmering world named Jewel Land filled with all sorts of magical gemstones. She was greeted by a princess who offered her a jewel apple.

When the girl accepted the gift, the apple glowed and then magically transformed into a cute animal thanks to the power of the princess! The princess told the girl the animal was a Jewelpet, a magical creature with sparkling gems for eyes. As wonderful as Jewelpets were, the princess said there was a problem - magic was starting to vanish in Jewel Land.

To save the place, the girl had to raise the Jewelpet she received and help it train to become a full-fledged magician! The girl had to go to a special school with its Jewelpet to become a master magician. Though the duo has to face a lot of hardships and trouble, a Jewelpet will return all the love and care their human partner gives them.

WHAT IS THE JEWELPET ANIME STORY?

As cute as the Sanrio lore is for Jewelpet, Studio Comet decided to give Jewelpet a different story for the anime. It has three lead Jewelpets - Ruby, Sapphire, and Garnet. The story starts in Jewel Land where magicians have turned the Jewelpets into Jewel Charms so they can travel to the magical forest.  Everyone was turned into a charm except Ruby, a silly white rabbit Jewelpet who likes to goof around.

However, before the charms can be taken to the magic forest, a strong wind blows the stork carrying the gems. The jewels were scattered across Takarageseki City on Earth! Punished for goofing off, Ruby is sent to Earth to retrieve her friends. There she is awakened by middle school student Rinko Kougyoku who helps Ruby on her mission to gather the Jewelpets. The two have to find all of the Jewelpets and bring them back to Jewel Land before the evil Jewelpet Diana gets to them first!

Because of its popularity, the Jewelpet anime received several spinoffs and sequels. Though the plots were slightly different from the original Jewelpet series, all of the shows had Ruby, Sapphire, and Garnet as the lead Jewelpets. The entire anime franchise is set in two worlds, Jewel Land and Earth. The premise is more or less the same for all of the shows - Jewelpets have to work hand in hand to save the world that they love and know.

HOW MANY JEWELPET SERIES ARE THERE?

Will you believe that there are actually 7 Jewelpet anime series? After Studio Comet released the Jewelpet anime in 2009, the show got a whole lot of spinoffs. That’s how popular the franchise was in Japan. In this section, we’ll go through all the spinoffs in the Jewelpet anime franchise.

Jewelpet Twinkle ☆

Released in 2010, the very first Jewelpet spinoff was called “Jewelpet Twinkle.” In the show, Ruby is made to go to Earth to find a human partner whose heart matches hers. There she meets the lead heroine Akari Sakura. Though they have ups and downs, the two work together to collect 12 Jewel Stones to get into the Jewel Star Grand Prix. The prize is three of any wish they make will be granted!

Jewelpet Sunshine

The next spinoff in the anime franchise is “Jewelpet Sunshine.” Released in 2011, the show has Ruby pairing up with her annoying classmate in Sunshine Academy, Kanon Mizushirou. Unlike the other Jewelpet heroines who are cheerful, innocent, or shy, Kanon stands out because she tends to be proud and outspoken. Part of the outcasts in Sunshine Academy, Kanon and Ruby have to find a way to graduate together!

Jewelpet Kira☆Deco

Released in 2012, "Jewelpet Kira☆Deco" tweaks the original anime canon by saying that the Jewelpets were born from the love and care of their queen Jeweline. Ruby, a rabbit Jewelpet owner learns of the legendary Mirror Ball and the Deco Stones. She and her friends Garnet and Saffie have to gather the Deco Stones to stop the Eternal Darkness from rampaging Earth!

Jewelpet Happiness

The fifth Jewelpet series, “Jewelpet Happiness” was released in 2013. It shows Lady Jewelina entrusting Ruby with the Magical Jewel Box. Her mission? To make friends and collect Magical Jewels. After failing to open the Jewelpet Cafe, Ruby meets three middle school students who become her friends and help her get the cafe to prosper. They also help her with her mission to gather as many Magical Jewels as she can!

Lady Jewelpet

Released in 2014, "Lady Jewelpet" is the sixth anime in the Jewelpet franchise. It tells the story of middle-schooler Momona who encounters a cute bunny named Ruby during her cousin's wedding. All of a sudden, she is whisked off to the Jewel Palace where Ruby reveals that she is one of the Lady Jewel candidates to become the queen of Jewel Land.

Jewelpet Magical Change

"Jewelpet Magical Change" is the seventh and final series in the Jewelpet franchise. In the 2015 anime show, the Jewel Castle loses its magic and falls from the sky. It lands right in the middle of a rural human town where the Jewelpets learn that humans have lost all interest in magic. Hoping to restore humanity's belief in magic, Ruby and her human bestie Airi Kirara go on a quest to spread the wonders of magic to humankind.

HOW MANY EPISODES ARE THERE IN JEWELPET?

Most of the time, anime shows only have 12 or 24 episodes per season to fit the 3-month course given by Japanese broadcasters. However, the Jewelpet franchise goes way beyond the usual anime series run! Each Jewelpet series, from the original show to the sixth anime, “Lady Jewelpet,” has a whopping 52 episodes. The only series to have a short episode count was the final Jewelpet anime, “Jewelpet Magical Change” which had 39 episodes. That’s still longer than most anime shows though!

IS THE JEWELPET ANIME WORTH WATCHING?

Well, it depends on what you’re looking for in an anime series. If you’re looking for a lot of fight scenes and action like in boys anime like “Jujutsu Kaisen,” then maybe Jewelpet isn’t for you. But if you’re a fan of all things kawaii, then you should definitely give Jewelpet a try! The anime was super successful among kawaii fans who loved the show for its cute characters and its interesting plot lines. It’s hard not to fall in love with Jewelpets and their dazzling eyes.

WHAT POWERS DO THE JEWELPETS HAVE?

The second one was serialized in another Shojo magazine called Ciao with illustrations and a story written by Sayuri Tatsuyama.

If books are more your thing, then Jewelpet also has an official light novel written by Hiroko Kansugi and illustrated by the artist POP. Titled  “Jewelpet: The Fuss in the Jewel Festival!?” the book introduces a novel-exclusive Jewelpet named Lolit. The novel is all about Lolit’s experiences as she bonds with Ruby and her friends while they set up the Jewel Festival in Jewel Land.

Jewelpet also has an official guidebook to commemorate the franchise’s third anime series, “Jewelpet Sunshine.” Published by the Yousensha, “Jewelpet Sunshine FANBOOK” gives fans a closer look at the anime. It dives into the show’s story outline, introduces fans into the world of Jewelpet, jots down character profiles, lists down songs used in the series, and it includes interviews from both the cast and staff members of “Jewelpet Sunshine.”

LET’S PLAY JEWELPET VIDEOGAMES

When Sanrio let Studio Comet adapt the Jewelpets into an anime series in 2009, everyone wanted to play together with Ruby and her jewel-adorned buddies. That’s why Jewelpet has seven different video games to tie in with the anime franchise!  The rhythm games "Jewelpet: Cute Magical Fantasy," and "Jewelpet: Magical DS Kirapi Kariin," were made for Nintendo DS. So was the game "Jewelpet: Let's Play Together in the Room of Magic," a title that combined Life simulation and Dating sim gameplay!

When Nintendo 3DS came out, two rhythm games were made for Jewelpet, "Jewelpet: Magical Rhythm Yay!" and "Jewelpet: Magical Dance in Style Deco!" The platform also got a Life simulation game called "Jewelpet: Cooking at the Magical Cafe!" which mixes together super fun cooking elements. The seventh game in the Jewelpet franchise was made for Japanese arcades. Called "Jewelpet: The Glittering Magical Jewel Box," the arcade game's main objective is for players to collect jewels and bonuses to win!

RELAX AT THE JEWELPET CAFE!

Unlike Cinnamoroll who has his very own permanent cafe, the Jewelpets don’t really have a regular cafe of their own. Over the years though the Jewelpet franchise has had a few pop-up cafes. These cafes are special places where fans can gather and talk about their favorite characters while enjoying Jewelpet treats!  Sometimes there's also exclusive Jewelpet goodies that fans can't find anywhere else!

One of these pop-ups was the “Jewelpet Cafe” which opened at the Hankyu Umeda Main Store in Osaka back in 2013. The cafe had special Jewelpet drinks and desserts! So many fans flocked to the pop-up cafe that the next year Sanrio had to host another one in Osaka. This time called the “Jewelpet Lady Cafe,” it was inspired by Ruby and Lua from the anime “Lady Jewelpet.”
